You’ve just arrived home from a long day at work and you find a goofy looking machine like the one pictured above sitting in your yard. You immediately wonder, “what is this contraption, why is it here, & what damage is it going to do?”

In short, Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is one of the least intrusive forms of installing conduit or cables. The process works by drilling underneath the earth to place the conduit instead of cutting open the ground. This method can be extremely beneficial when needing to cross roads, rivers, driveways, and any other object that you don’t want to destroy. While this isn’t completely “dig free” it is one of the cleanest options to use when trying to minimize the restoration needed on your property.

Directional Drilling Example

So, what does this involve? To begin, the operators develop a bore plan to determine how deep they will need to drill to cross whatever obstacle necessary. They will then dig an entry and exit pit for the drill to navigate into and out of. If there are other utilities nearby, digging small potholes might also be a necessity to avoid hitting those utilities. If all goes well, there should be minimal destruction to your property.

We believe in making an area look even better than we found it. That is why we use track boards when tracking the equipment through yards to avoid leaving ruts. We work to protect your sod on the areas that do require digging so we can lay the grass back down as if it were never touched. If a trusted company is performing HDD work in your area, you shouldn’t need to worry. The utility company has ultimately chosen the most efficient and least destructive method to install their utility lines.
