About Directional Drilling

Directional drilling, commonly referred to as horizontal directional drilling or HDD, is the ability to maneuver a rod under the ground and direct it around or under obstacles.

Directional drilling is used when trenching or excavating is not practical and minimizing environmental disruption is desired. Not only is this type of drilling the preferred method of installing pipes into the ground, horizontal directional drilling causes the least amount of environmental disturbance possible and allows you to reach areas which otherwise would be too difficult to access.

The drilling happens in three stages.

  1. The first stage requires drilling of a pilot hole on the designed path
  2. The second stage enlarges the hole through the use of a larger cutting tool known as the back reamer
  3. The third stage places the product or pipe in the enlarged hole. Directional control capabilities assist the rig operator in making necessary changes in the directions of the drilling head

Drilling fluid is a mixture of water and, usually, bentonite clay, with additives used to improve performance. It is continuously pumped to the cutting head or drill bit to facilitate the removal of cuttings.

An HDD company performs horizontal boring with the help of drilling fluid, with a few machines designed to use air or air and foam. Air and foam machines are used for rock.bore hole, cool the cutting head, and lubricate the passage of the product pipe.

Directional drilling is utilized in a variety of applications, including when the following aspects need to be incorporated into or avoided in a drilling area:

  • Water lines
  • Sewer lines
  • Power conduits
  • Cable conduits
  • Communication conduits
  • Environmental remediation casings
  • Gas lines
  • Oil lines
  • Roadways
  • Waterways
  • Sidewalks
  • Buildings

Additionally, horizontal drilling is preferable to more costlier methods such as conventional drilling in numerous circumstances. These include use for crossing waterways, crossing roadways, congested areas, and environmentally sensitive areas.

Some key advantages to utilizing directional boring include:

  • Providing less traffic disruption compared to conventual drilling
  • A lower cost for the client
  • Numerous directional options
  • Providing deeper and/or longer installation
  • Being able to avoid the necessity of an access pit
  • Shorter completion times
  • Environmental safety
